ARCHITECTURE

To my mind, one of the best working architects in California right now is Pat Bernatz. He can weave together historical context, consideration of local landscape and light qualities, and the asks of contemporary life to make inviting, atmospheric spaces. Take a look at his whole portfolio, please. But in the meantime a photo from his own house. A truly pleasing combination of materials and colors, and a testament to the fact that the best architects know where to invite shadow.

One of the best gifts I ever received was a copy of The Gorgeous Nothings, a stunning facsimile compilation of Emily Dickinson’s ‘envelope poems.’ This series compiles Dickinson’s scrawlings on bits of scraps paper, gifting the reader with insight into her process and nuggets of poetic wisdom.

GIVE

Instead of giving you a gift list, I’ll just share some quality gift lists or stores I’d buy gifts from instead. Quail Store, a new home/lifestyle boutique in Philadelphia, has a well-curated selection. I have always loved these delightful Iko-Iko (pictured) cord covers. Also not to miss is everything in the Michigan-based boutique August - whose shopowner is lovely and has flawless taste. Her online gift list here. This gift list is Hudson Valley/Rivertown NY specific, but lots available online.

ADMIRE

Perfectly in tune with the hyperfeminine elements trending this season, like ribbons and bows, the oversize ruffle in the Scalamandre x The Met’s new collection caught my eye. I’m usually a little wary of collabs, but this is well executed - interesting and informative with traceable roots to history.

LISTEN

Turned on to these young musicians out of Northern Colorado, Frail Talk, a few months ago and keep going back to their instagram for dreamy live snippets. They feel wiser and older than they are. I am looking forward to their 2024 release. Self-described: “a blooming universe of squiggly indie music for squiggly people.” Click here to for embedded playlist and music videos.

BUY (FOR ME)

Studio X’s silvery resin ashtray is on top of my Christmas list this year. I’m always drawn to objects with an element of subversiveness and this confounding object with its otherworldly sheen just got me.
